TIPS ON PREPARING YOUR YARD FOR WINTER

December 20, 2016

Before winter arrives, chances are you prepare your indoor environment for the cold weather by cleaning your heating unit and getting out your winter clothes. However, your yard needs attention if it is to survive the winter as well. Here are a few tips for winterizing your yard before the cold comes.

Mulch Leaves

Even if your grass has stopped growing, mow your lawn to grind up and mulch any fallen leaves. This will supply your yard's soil with a variety of nutrients to keep it healthy.

Prune Perennials

Trim back perennial plants and remove any dead leaves or branches. Plants that are properly pruned may bear several positive results the following spring:

  • More robust blooms
  • Less insect invasion in the spring
  • Less crowding during the blooming season

You may choose to remove some perennial plants, depending on their overall condition.

Protect Water Spigits and Pipes

If you live in an area where temperatures plummet below zero during the winter, you should protect any water sources such as outdoor spigots, sprinklers, and hoses. Disconnect and cover sprinklers, store hoses in a warm, dry area and cover your outdoor spigots with insulated foam to prevent bursting or rusting.

Your yard needs protection from the winter weather conditions to keep it looking its best when spring arrives. For more information on how to winterize your yard, contact AA & Bob Allen Inc.
